Stockholm's Insect City and Buzz Building take cricket cultivation to a whole new level

Belatchew Arkitekter’s studio Belatchew Labs are the masterminds behind the Insect City and Buzz Building complex - an integrated facility that hosts full-cycle cricket production, from egg to plate. Belatchew Labs' cricket-producing complex offers a sustainable protein source for the city amid population growth and an increasingly insecure supply of food.

The Buzz Building Plan consists of nine round buildings in the Stockholm area, each with 10,350 m² of farmable surface that will be used for the cultivation of crickets. The complex is designed to integrate the whole insect production cycle, from egg to edible insect, all under one roof. Additionally, extra space in the Buzz Building will be set aside as a safe haven for endangered wild bees, protecting them from extinction as well as keeping Stockholm a productive and fertile city.

Mimicking the structure of an insect, a curvaceous steel exoskeleton makes up the main form of the Buzz Building. Insect production will take place on the second floor and visitors will be able to peruse the ground floor insect restaurant where insects will be prepared and sold. The entire process of insect production will be completely transparent to visitors, inviting the public to observe and gain confidence in the food production process, unlike the often mysterious meat production sector.
